🔗 Share this article An Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange accommodation after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked. Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering towards the casino, believing it was a place to spend the evening somewhere that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for acing a crucial interview the next day, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible. The world needs more people with such compassion. I must have looked confused since a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked whether I needed help. I explained my predicament and immediately she offered I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the local university – a perfect solution, given that my my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered some food: one of the filled rolls she had from her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night. Looking back, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she took being a woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain very grateful. I never did attending the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of kindness. I hope the universe has returned her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more people with such compassion.
