Arsenal's Disputed Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Set to End This Coming Year

The North London club has confirmed that its contentious sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in June this upcoming year.

Context and Criticism

The arrangement, estimated to cost around ÂŁ10m per year, began in 2018 and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in ongoing conflicts in the eastern areas of the bordering Congo.

In February, Arsenal was criticized for issuing a severe rebuff to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to talk about the deal.

Nevertheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to go their separate ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the original goals of the partnership – promoting conservation and responsible tourism, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and creating a lasting foundation for visitor increase,” read an Gunners' release.

The release further noted that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's goal of becoming an international sporting hub in Africa and stage additional international competitions while executing grassroots football initiatives that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches develop their skills and promote increased engagement in sports throughout the nation.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and asserted it had been “driving forward” the club's ambitions.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace staging protests outside the club's home ground during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in the end of April.

Demonstrators showed a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to conceal the partnership emblem on jerseys.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

Around that time, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Meanwhile, the Spanish club signed a fresh deal for the same period that has resulted in the branding featured on the Spanish club's men's and women's shirts.
