Erin Patterson, the Australian national serving life for the deadly fungal meal, has formally filed a legal challenge challenging her convictions.

The fifty-one-year-old was determined to be culpable of killing three family members and trying to kill one more individual with a poisonous fungal dish at her residence in the state of Victoria in that year.

According to Australian legislation, appeals do not happen automatically, and her defense lawyers needed to persuade the Appeals Court that there could have been procedural faults in the legal process.

Patterson's petition was filed on the start of the week, once the court provided her attorneys permission to challenge the verdicts.

The basis for the appeal are still unknown.

Asserting Non-Guilt

Throughout the 11-week trial, Patterson repeatedly stated she was not guilty, claiming that everything was a terrible accident, and she had not intentionally included deadly mushrooms in the prepared lunch she cooked and served for the midday meal.

Her husband's parents the Patterson couple, each seventy years old, and her sister-in-law Wilkinson, 66, passed away following the meal.

Heather's husband Wilkinson, a religious leader, survived after recovering from a coma, and continues to experience medical problems associated with the poisoning.

Jury Decision

Once seven days of consideration passed, the twelve-member jury delivered their unanimous decision - guilty on all charges.

She was handed among the lengthiest incarceration periods imposed on a woman convict in Australia - life in prison, with no chance of release for a minimum of thirty-three years.

That means Patterson would be in her elderly years prior to being eligible for parole.

Judicial Review

Currently she possesses the chance to dispute the jury's conviction.

The twenty-eight day timeframe to submit a challenge concluded in early October, though an updated legal provision, providing attorneys additional days without needing to explain why, provided her legal team extra days to lodge the paperwork.

Trial Details

Considerable public fascination in the deadly mushroom matter, and a media frenzy surrounded the modest courthouse in the provincial area of the town while the case was heard.

Throughout two months of witness accounts, jurors listened to information indicating Patterson had foraged poisonous mushrooms in local communities and enticed those affected to the lethal dinner with deceptive claims that she had cancer - before trying to conceal her actions by deceiving authorities and disposing of evidence.

Her estranged husband, Patterson, had also been invited to the lunch but backed out recently, partly because he thought that his wife had been trying to poison him over a long period.

Previous Incidents

Subsequent to the verdict, information emerged that he had become severely unwell post ingestion of multiple dishes she prepared earlier that he experienced unconsciousness, a large part of his bowel had been surgically removed, and his family had been told to prepare for his passing twice as his recovery was considered unlikely.

Ongoing Status

Patterson resides in a female maximum security prison - the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre in that urban area.

When the sentence was delivered, the judicial officer stated to those present she remains for most hours daily in her confinement space, with no communication with fellow prisoners due to her high-risk prisoner designation.

The justice observed that Patterson's reputation and the widespread fascination in the matter meant she would likely "remain a notorious prisoner going forward, and, therefore, remain at significant risk from other incarcerated individuals".
