Blasts and Low-Altitude Jets Heard in Venezuelan Capital City Caracas

Witness testimonies surfaced of multiple blasts and the sound of low-altitude aircraft in Caracas in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning. This event has sparked allegations from the Venezuelan government and calls for international intervention.

Caracas Blames Washington of Military Action

The socialist administration has blamed the US of what it calls "foreign aggression," claiming that former President Donald Trump allegedly directed attacks against the South American nation. In an formal statement, the authorities confirmed that attacks had impacted Caracas and several other provinces: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua state.

"The sole aim of this attack is to seize control of our nation's strategic resources, especially its oil and minerals," the statement declared.

Caracas appealed to the global community to denounce the actions, which it labeled a "clear infringement of international norms" that placed millions of lives in peril.

Reports of Explosions and Military Bases Hit

Residents described experiencing approximately several powerful blasts around the middle of the night in the morning. People in different areas reportedly ran into the open.

"The earth trembled. This is frightening. We experienced explosions and planes in the area," stated one local.

Black smoke was observed pouring from two military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota military airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna military base, where president Maduro is reported to have a residence.

Global Response

The leader of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, claimed on a social platform that "At this moment they are striking Venezuela... attacking it with projectiles." He requested an immediate meeting of the UN Security Council.

Colombia, which recently joined the UNSC, stated it would activate operational measures at its border with Venezuela.

Background

These alleged strikes follow a extended military buildup by the United States against the Venezuelan government. Since last summer, there has been a significant American military buildup off Venezuela's northern coast and a series of air strikes on vessels linked to narco-trafficking.

Venezuela's government has declared "the implementation of external threat" and commanded all national defense measures to be implemented. It has also summoned its supporters to mobilize and "repudiate this imperialist attack."

US authorities and the Defense Department did not promptly commented on requests for clarification regarding the reports.
