Strong cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse onto flimsy shelters housing Palestinians displaced by war in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four individuals. These deaths underscores the perilous situation that continue after more than two years of intense bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Ceasefire Offers No Respite from Severe Elements

Although a truce has been in effect since last fall, aid groups state that Palestinians broadly lack the sufficient housing required to withstand recurring winter storms.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the bodies, said on this week that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold overnight.

"The world has allowed us to experience loss of life in all its forms," said Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Tent Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three members of a one family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage relative, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of the city. At least five others were injured in the event.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the debris that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as food and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population reside in makeshift tents since their homes were reduced to rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Fatality Figures After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, reports over four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry keeps detailed fatality data that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and 40 girls – had been lost their lives after the truce started because of armed actions, such as drone strikes, airstrikes, artillery fire and use of bullets. Those figures, he explained, represented cases where sufficient details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the overall count is believed to be higher. He added that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from the Strip. "So what the world now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring lack of assistance and a lack of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the colder season. It’s the 3rd cold season since the war between the state and the group started on 7 October 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately twelve hundred individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.
