This past summer, revised directives were rolled out to tackle the dissemination of false narratives on social media, which had escalated after the tragic murder of three schoolgirls in a English town previously.

Yet, campaigners have raised concerns that this move could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of those accused and spark further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are not shared with the public.

A former chief superintendent, who worked in the Metropolitan Police, described the requirement for law enforcement to disclose the ethnicity of suspects in incidents involving people of colour as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He expressed understanding for his former colleagues in the police, explaining that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Political Reaction

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose constituency includes the area where the train halted, called it “unfortunate” but necessary for authorities to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, stating that online platforms are leveraged to push agendas, making it vital for law enforcement to provide facts to counter rumors.

Far-Right Exploitation

Prior to the official disclosure, right-leaning politicians had called for a faster response. For instance, the shadow home secretary pushed for timely release of identity details, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the public needed to know “without delay”.

Moreover, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. One account named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—shared an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been yelling “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Even after police confirmed that the arrested individuals were British nationals, some individuals continued to suggest that details was being withheld. A former Reform UK co-leader stated it was “hard to believe” that the incident was not an act of terrorism, despite official statements to the opposite.
