Mary Earps Explains Her Book Was Not Written to Tear Anyone Down

Keeper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her recently published autobiography was not designed to “criticize individuals” and shared worry that media response has been “misinterpreted.”

Controversial Comments and Fan Backlash

The retired international player, who played a key role in the tournament success, received criticism from fans and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after sharing views about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and manager Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “encouraging negative conduct” by bringing Hampton back to the Lionesses lineup after dropping her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how some things have been distorted,” Earps shared in an interview.

Explaining Her Motives

Earps strongly emphasized that her book was not designed to hurt others.

  • “My memoir wasn’t created to tear anyone down in any way whatsoever.”
  • “That isn’t my personality as a person.”
  • “This reflects reality. It has repercussions. It is not entertainment.”

She also remarked about how the women’s game has moved into an area that has become “almost like performance,” where personal lives are scrutinized heavily for audience entertainment.

Dynamic with the Manager

Earps wrote about being replaced as the first-choice keeper ahead of the tournament and how that created tension with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not a sudden deterioration” in their relationship—just a clash of viewpoints—and she maintains respect for the manager.

“Several incidents that happened in the summer that I hoped had unfolded otherwise,” Earps stated.

Individual Difficulties

In the autobiography, Earps opened up about the harassment she endured at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” chapter to go back to because it brought back previous trauma.

  • “I couldn’t assert myself at that time.”
  • “I always believed that people disapproved of me for a long time.”
  • “I was trained to feel like no one truly cared.”

These feelings led to anxiety episodes, and Earps revealed she faced challenges with physical appearance and resorted to drinking during the Covid pandemic to manage anxiety and depression.

Private Matters and Aspirations

Earps recently shared that she is in a same-sex relationship and expressed pride about her connection with Kitty.

She also mentioned her wish to have children and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for potential family planning.

“I would love to be a parent and have a family of my own,” Earps commented. “I love playing football, but I hope to have a child later down the line.”

Earps characterized the egg-freezing procedure as “crazy and invasive” and pushed for more studies tailored to athletes undergoing similar procedures.

In her statements, Earps emphasized that she has no second thoughts about her professional journey or personal choices, stressing that she always acted with integrity.
