To the Checkout Assistant That Left Me Totally Without Words – My Hat's Off to You

This occurred on a day of rest, and I felt in a foul mood, filling up my mum’s car. The location was a common fuel stop that operates as a convenience store, which often leads of waiting behind shoppers with carts of pricey provisions. It's an awful situation to happen when all you want is to complete a simple refueling. Awful.

My position was fourth in the waiting line. There was only employee working, a young woman. There was something unusual in her demeanor. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had completed payment for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, I was certain overhearing the cashier bid him a wonderful day. Unusual. Could be I misunderstood, or maybe she did say it and was being sarcastic. I wondered if she might actually be an ally in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for those who delay straightforward customers like me.

I moved up, now third in line. The person ahead of the queue completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “Have a wonderful day.” To be precise, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. Someone from the US? At this location? She had the accent, and hardly anyone here says to others those exact words, or simply a good day. Quite out of place. You don’t get US citizens knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not working in petrol stations or other places.

I was second now. Following a senior shopper embroiled in a right old battle with her carryall, her purchases, her wallet and her membership pass. The process dragged on. After she finished, the woman also got told to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious to her, to observe that response as they gaze at you, without a smile, and reply with genuine earnest: “That is quite humorous.” However, nothing occurred of anything hilarious to say.

In the end, I embraced the genuine warmth – or a performance of it, essentially the same as the same thing – as she gazed directly into my eyes, deep into my soul, and wished me to have a great day. I felt better for it. It was a good thing.
